On July 15, 1942 two B-17s and six P-38s were on route to England when they encountered bad weather and crash landed on the Greenland Ice Cap. The 25 crewmen were rescued and the planes abandoned. For fifty years the planes slowly sank into the ice to a depth of 268 feet. In May of 1992 an expedition tunneled to one of the P-38s and removed it piece by piece. It was taken to Middlesboro, Ky, where it is on display to the public while being restored to flying condition.
This is a picture of the recovered P-38 as it sat in the ice cave 268 feet below the surface.
